Central Coast Staff

We have four locations on the Central Coast of California, with four practitioners ready to work with your needs! These locations include Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo, and Templeton.

Donald Newton, CPO      Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist

Zak Malzhan, CP   Certified Prosthetist
Zak has been around prosthetics as far as he can remember since his dad is an above knee amputee from way before Zak was born. Zak shares, “I was always fascinated with the prosthesis and enjoyed testing out ways to make my dad’s prosthesis better and more comfortable since I was a kid”.  Zak was raised in Paso Robles, where he graduated from Paso Robles High School. Zak attended Hancock College and worked part time in our Santa Maria Achilles office prior to leaving for more school. Zak attended Sonoma State and finished his grad school at CSU Dominguez Hills before returning to Sonoma County for his residency in Petaluma, CA. In 2004, he moved back to San Luis Obispo County and came back to Achilles Prosthetics to provide custom care as a Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist in both our San Luis Obispo and Templeton office locations. "Being raised in the North County community, my passion is to bring the highest level of care and technology to our local amputees and orthotic users", explains Zac. When not crafting prosthetics and orthotics, you will often find him enjoying time with friends and family with big barbeques and motorcycle rides.

Jerry Hartmann, CPO      Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist

Jerry was born and raised on the Central Coast and has successfully cared for amputee and physically challenged patients for 35 years.

Jerry comes to our team as a seasoned professional.  Many of you are already familiar with Jerry in his previous role as the Clinical Director of a prosthetics and orthotics office in Santa Maria for 11 years.

Jerry first found interest in patient care through his uncle who began his craft treating patients during WWII. Jerry was fortunate to work side by side with him a short time after he left the Marines with honors. For Jerry, it is simple; “Helping patients achieve their new physical goals - physical independence, healing and gaining a more fulfilling life - is something I love” Notes Jerry. “My patients inspire me every day with their courage and determination.” Outside of work, Jerry enjoys his time with his four children ranging in ages from 13 yrs. To 28 yrs. His latest venture is learning to ride the unicycle with his 3 youngest children. You will often find him riding his bike, hiking, camping, and recreational swimming. His favorite places to travel are Hawaii and Mexico, where he is working on his long term goal of becoming fluent in Spanish.
